Rise and Resist Climate Action Group

The Rise and Resist Climate Action Group is committed to confronting the global ecological emergency. The Earth is being burned, drowned, and poisoned. We must act.

We are committed to organizing and participating in direct action to raise awareness about the climate change crisis. We support aggressive legislation at the city, state, and national levels that will end carbon emissions by 2030.

Solidarity among all age groups and across diverse communities is crucial in this fight.

Follow the Science

Covid-19 has shown once again that we must listen to scientists or an emergency turns into a catastrophe.  The Rise and Resist Climate Action Group is committed to confronting the climate crisis before it is too late. Science tells us that if nothing is done to eliminate fossil fuels over the next decade, we will reach a tipping point. After that, there is no turning back the clock. We hurtle towards a global climate catastrophe, without a vaccine or miracle drug to save us.

For the poor and communities of color, this dystopian future is now. The numbers are as difficult to conceive as they are heartbreaking. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.6 million people die worldwide from poisoned air. These deaths go unnoticed because they overwhelmingly occur in the poorest countries and communities, those that live closest to fossil fuel extractive industries and their hazardous waste.

WHO also projects that, beginning in the decades after 2030, millions more will die in these same frontline communities from diseases directly related to the changing climate—malnutrition, diarrhea, heat exposure and malaria. Confronting climate change is confronting injustice. Rise and Resist is committed to a just transition to a renewable energy future that centers the needs of frontline communities.

Direct Action

Rise and Resist is a direct action group. We go out into the streets. We challenge the powerful. We march. We chant. We hold vigils. We engage in nonviolent civil disobedience. We do whatever it takes to disrupt business as usual and shine light on the truth of the climate emergency.

Past and current campaigns have been focused on:

  • JP Morgan Chase, the world’s largest bank funder of fossil fuels along with Bank Of America and TD Bank, and other fossil fuel financial enablers.

  • The fossil fuel giant Koch industries and their business interests

  • Blackrock, a massive investor in fossil fuels

  • Insurers of fossil fuels such as AIG and Chubb

  • Environmental/social justice for frontline communities

  • State and local budgetary allocations for climate/social justice

  • Crypto currency mining and it’s devastating effects on the environment

As a member of the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition, we have taken to the streets against Blackrock for its massive investments in fossil fuels. We participated in actions protesting local fossil fuel infrastructure projects, including the Williams Pipeline and the North Brooklyn Pipeline. With Sane Energy, we chained ourselves to tractors fighting the Cricket Valley fracked gas plant. With the NY Renews coalition, we blocked the doors to Andrew Cuomo’s office until he agreed to pass the CLCPA bill, a first step in committing NY to strong action on climate. With the Movement for a Green New Deal, we disrupted the Albany Budget Committee hearing to demand funding for climate initiatives.
