rise and resist elections action group
It’s now or never that we all take action to stop Trump and his fascist MAGA movement from taking power in the White House and Congress!
Early voting get-out-the-vote (GOTV) activities continue! Here’s our updated-daily chart of what’s happening where and when that people can join in – phone banking, texting, door knocking, ballot curing, and much more. Rather than sitting at home nervously kvetching, take action to “make it big!” The turnout numbers so far are breaking records everywhere. As the phrase goes, “When We Vote, We Win!”
Early Voting! Continues through Sun. Nov. 3 – find YOUR neighborhood voting site here: https://www.vote.nyc/elections
“Get on the bus!” to swing congressional districts in our region on Long Island, up the Hudson Valley, over in New Jersey, and out to Pennsylvania – see our chart link above! PA is a double-hit opportunity to also help GOTV for the presidential race.
On Election Day (Tues. Nov. 5th), rather than biting your nails, come out and join us at 12 noon for another “No Dictators in the USA” protest outside the headquarters of Fox News, located near Rockefeller Center at 1211 6th Ave. (SW cor. of 48th St.). This protest is one of our weekly “Truth Tuesdays” series that has been going on for over 3 years now!
After Election Day, we have to protect the election results:
It's clear that Trump and the MAGA movement will try to usurp and undermine the vote counting process, and try to steal the election should they outright lose. So we all must be prepared that the election process will not end with Election Day but will continue on:
At some point, the presidential and congressional elections will be called by official media sources.
The Electoral College delegations will meet in their respective state capitals, this year on Tues. Dec. 17th.
The congressional certification of the overall Electoral College vote on Thurs/ January 6th in the US Capitol.
The Inauguration Ceremony at noon on Mon. Jan. 20 on the steps of the US Capitol.
We will have to be vigilant at every one of these steps, and may have to respond to developments fast. Some of our out-in-the-streets plans may be well publicized, and others less so (in order to protect participants.) The best way to keep abreast of things will be to join in our weekly online general meetings (Tues. eves at 7 pm), and/or to join into weekly meetings of RaR’s Elections Action Group (Wed. at 5 pm) and/or street-focused Actions Committee (Wed. at 6 pm.)
Finally, we offer these perspectives on the various ballot referenda here in New York. Look for them on the back of your ballot!
Prop 1, the Equal Rights Amendment (for New York State) – Rise and Resist is supporting it and the New Yorkers for Equal Rights campaign that is its lead advocacy source. Reports are that most people don’t know about Prop 1, but when they learn about it, they support it by significant margins. However, conservative political forces also have a well-organized opposition campaign underway, framing it as a threat to women’s sports because of the inclusion of transgender rights in the scope of the proposition. If you want to help build public awareness and support for Prop 1, reach out to NYER to join in their voter outreach activities.
Props 2-6 (for NYC) – Most progressive political forces in NYC are opposing these props because they believe they are a power-grab by Mayor Eric Adams. Also, good government advocates say that these props were developed through a rushed, anti-democratic process at the last minute. Here’s some good background articles from the online news sites The City, City Limits, and Gothamist, and a blog post from the NY Civil Liberties Union. Here’s info on the ”No Power Grab in NYC” advocacy campaign.
